Contamination in industrial fluids and waters is a real cost driver before it is anything else. It raises the cost of disposing of a spent fluid, it degrades efficiency in whatever process the fluid is running, it forces early purchase of replacement fluid, and it adds labor that would not exist if the load had been caught earlier. A test that takes three days to answer is a test that answers after the shift, the batch, or the sump is already lost. A test that answers in fifteen minutes is one you can act on while you are still standing at the tank.

One instrument, several plants

Anywhere bacteria, fungus, algae, or mold can build up in fifteen minutes of reading time.

Cooling tower water

Biofilm is the principal facilitator of Legionella growth in a cooling tower. A fifteen minute reading catches biofilm accumulating before it fouls a heat exchanger and gives that growth somewhere to take hold.

Aluminum can plant coolants

High-speed can lines run coolant hard. Quantifying biological load in real time catches a rising trend before it shows up as a quality problem on the line.

Soil bioremediation

A bioremediation site lives or dies on whether the microbial population is doing its job. Monitoring it without waiting days for a plate count means a stalled site gets caught while there is still time to fix it.

Industrial waste treatment

Activated sludge treatment depends on maximum bacterial activity. The same reading that reads a coolant sump reads a sludge sample, simply and inexpensively, in real time, rather than as an overnight lab result.

What the reading actually tells you

Biofilm accumulation, read before it fouls anything.

A traditional growth count on a cooling tower sample takes one to three days to come back. By the time it does, the biofilm it is measuring has had that much longer to spread across the heat exchanger surface.

Be precise about what this buys you. The HMB X reveals biofilm accumulation in a cooling tower system, and biofilm is the principal facilitator of Legionella growth in that system. The instrument does not detect Legionella and it does not diagnose it. What it gives a plant engineer is an early, real-time read on the condition that lets that growth take hold, in time to act on the biofilm itself rather than the outbreak it can lead to.
