The Sawtooth and the Sine Wave

Plot two coolant maintenance programs on the same year-long chart and you'll see two completely different shapes. One climbs and crashes over and over, a jagged sawtooth with sharp peaks and hard drops. The other runs as a long, flat, almost uneventful line. The difference between those two shapes is the difference between a biocide program and a stabilizer program, and it's worth understanding before you decide which one your sump needs.
How a biocide program actually behaves
A biocide works by killing the organisms in the fluid. That's straightforward, and it works, right up until the biocide itself gets used up doing the job. As the active concentration falls below the level needed to keep killing, the surviving population finds room to grow, and it does, fast. That fast regrowth is what shops call a bloom, a sudden spike in microbial activity that shows up as odor, or a plate count that jumped since last time.
The practical consequence is a redose window measured in hours. Miss it, even by a day, and the population can bloom past where it was before the last dose. That's why biocide programs typically call for continuous, daily, or weekly dosing. It isn't overcaution, it's what the chemistry requires to stay ahead of a population that recovers fast once the killing stops. Plotted over time, that cycle of dose, kill, deplete, bloom, redose produces exactly the sawtooth shape, sharp peaks and sharp drops, over and over.
What a stabilizer does differently
BioTech's Mark II Stabilizer works on a different principle entirely. It's non-biocidal, meaning it does not kill the organisms in the fluid. Instead, the organisms simply won't grow while it's present. Population doesn't crash, it declines slowly, by attrition, over a period of days rather than hours. Because the mechanism runs the same way in reverse, recovery after a redose is equally slow, which stretches the redose window from hours to days.
That slower rhythm shows up as a completely different shape on the same year-long chart. Instead of a sawtooth, a stabilizer-conditioned sump traces something closer to a protracted horizontal sine wave, with no extremes. No sharp bloom, no crash back down, just a long, low, mostly flat line. That absence of extremes is what lets fluid life extend much further than a biocide-only program typically manages.
What the shape means for the shift you actually work
The dosing cadence tells the same story from a labor angle. Where a biocide program needs continuous, daily, or weekly attention to stay ahead of the redose window, Mark II Stabilizer is typically applied monthly or bimonthly. That's not a marginal difference in a maintenance schedule, it's the difference between a task someone has to remember every shift and a task someone schedules once a month and forgets about until it's due again.
Stabilizer is also effective against both bacteria and fungi in the same dose, where a biocide-only program often needs a bactericide and a fungicide mixed to cover both. And for a sump that's already gone bad, the two approaches aren't mutually exclusive. BioTech's own guidance is that Stabilizer can be combined with a Triazine biocide on a neglected sump, getting the shock speed of a biocide kill together with the long persistence of Stabilizer afterward, rather than treating it as a choice between one or the other.
Why some fluid already ships with it
Many fluid manufacturers incorporate Mark II Stabilizer directly into their formulations, which removes the need for tankside additions altogether. If your current coolant already carries it, the sine wave shape may already be doing its job quietly in the background. If your sump has been running the sawtooth pattern instead, chasing a bloom every few days, that's usually a sign the program is fighting the chemistry rather than working with it.
Reading your own maintenance log
You don't need a chart to figure out which shape your own sump is running. Pull the last few months of dosing records. If the entries are frequent, close together, and usually tied to a complaint about smell or a bad plate count that just came back, that's the sawtooth, a program reacting to blooms after they've already happened. If the entries are spaced weeks apart and nothing in between required an emergency dose, that's the sine wave, a program staying ahead of the population rather than chasing it down after the fact.
The shape matters for budgeting labor as much as it matters for the fluid. A team that's dosing continuously and still fielding odor complaints is spending real hours on a program that's structurally built to run that way. Moving to a slower, flatter rhythm doesn't just change what's happening in the tank, it changes how often someone has to stop what they're doing to deal with it.
